ARIAM should be welcomed as a sign that major publishers & studios are no longer treating AI policy as a purely technical debate. But its credibility will depend on whether “responsible innovation” means enforceable copyright or simply softer route for AI deployment under the language of safeguards.

A new group—The Alliance for Responsible Innovation in The Arts & Media—says its mission is to “ensure that AI is developed and deployed responsibly, sustainably and for the betterment of all society.” Love it, but I have some questions…

Big Tech keeps being found too powerful — yet too often the remedies barely touch the business model. Antitrust only matters if rulings lead to real structural change, not fines treated as a cost of doing business. #BigTech #Antitrust #CompetitionLaw #TechPolicy

Is Big Tech Facing Its “Big Tobacco Moment”?

Tech giants including Meta, Google, and Apple are facing increasing popular resentment and losing more and more major court battles. Yet their profits and power look about as secure as ever.

Pirate sports streams are not a public service. They exploit demand, undermine rights holders, and expose fans to risk. FIFA is right to push back with takedown action, even as enforcement must stay accurate and accountable. #Piracy #DMCA #WorldCup #SportsRights

Hey Victoria Furniss, I have a few questions. You write: “ARIAM aligns content and tech to ensure AI works for the creative economy. We build shared standards and a unified voice to turn fragmented concern into influence.” Nice sentiment, but extremely vague. You invite questions, so here are a few:

1-does ARIAM call for the unqualified right for creators to authorize or prohibit the use of their works in training AI?

2-does ARIAM believe that consent is only obtained if it is specifically & freely negotiated, not performatively effectively via TOS or non-negotiable contractual provisions?

3-does ARIAM embrace a requirement that all persons materially involved in the creation of creative works, even if they are not the copyright owners (e.g. side musicians), must provide their affirmative consent prior to use of the works to which they contributed?

I look forward to hearing from you and understanding more about your mission. The comment about not wanting to “slow down” AI development makes me a bit nervous. Demanding that AI is built via ethical means necessarily involves some measure of slowing down since it introduces the friction of licensing. I agree with you that licensing isn’t a barrier to AI development, but…
